Deepfakes, image-based rights and what safety by design should demand
Generative AI can now reproduce someone’s face, body or voice convincingly enough to fool the people who know them, and it can do so without that person ever finding out. The harms that follow, from deepfakes to image-based abuse, land far more often on women and girls. Ula Ojiaku has spent recent months looking at how image-based rights and digital safety are, and are not, protected today.
In this interactive session she maps where current protections fall short, what other countries are starting to try, and what genuine safety by design should ask of technology companies, regulators and organisations. Participants work through real-world cases and help decide which practical steps matter most for protecting identity, dignity and agency.
Uloaku (Ula) Ojiaku founded and leads Mezahab Group, a firm working on AI strategy, transformation and governance. She advises boards and executives on adopting AI responsibly and takes part in national and international work on AI governance, safety and public policy.
